As we’ve said many a time on the Blog finding a correctly fitting bra can be tough and if you’ve never had a bra fitting or it’s a long time since you’ve had one, then you can experience some issues or discomforts with your bra and not know why.
That’s where our new series of posts comes in. The “Why does my bra…?” series is here to help you understand the niggly issues you might be having and to help to iron out the problems by giving you solutions.
This week we'll be changing it up slightly and tackling the issue “Why is my bra uncomfortable?”.
OK so you know the drill, most women never stop moaning or whinging about how uncomfortable their bras are and our social medias are clogged up with posts like this...
...and we do understand that it's nice to come home after a day at work and put your PJs on but it shouldn't be because you're bra is so uncomfortable that you really can't wait to get it off.
There are a number of things that could make your bra uncomfortable below we will list them and how to stop it happening...
- Your bra digs into your shoulders.
If when you take your bra off, you're left with red marks or large grooves in your shoulders it can mean that you're in the incorrect size. This is a tell-tale sign that the back band is too large leaving the straps to hold all the weight of your breasts.
Solution: Try a smaller back size. On average women tend to wear a back size that is 2 sizes too large. Tighten it up and you'll definitely see a difference.
2. The underwire digs in under your arm.
If your underwire is digging in then chances are that it's the wrong size or the incorrect style for your boobs. A correctly fitting wire should encase your breast completely running around the base of your breast from the centre right round to underneath your armpit.
Solution: Opt for a larger cup size so the wire extends further under yout armpit, also note that when putting on your bra you should adopt the 'Scoop and Swoop' technique to ensure all your breast tissue is in the cup and none is being squished or poked by the wires.
3. Your back band is rubbing/chaffing.
If your back band is rubbing you or chaffing then this tends to be because the back band is able to move. A correctly fitting back band should be firm/tight so that there is no movement and your breasts can be properly supported.
Solution: If you're being left with sores and are constantly re-adjusting your bra back band then you need to try a smaller back band to ensure it stays in place.
So there you have it, 3 bra symptoms that regularly cause discomfort that can be easily rectified and the resounding advice is that the discomfort is more than likely caused by the bra being worn in the wrong size. However do bear in mind that all boobs are different and certain styles of bras could cause discomfort just because they are not quite right for you. Ensuring you have the right size in the first place can help you find what works for you.
